Living with Covid
In January 2022 I got Covid. The enforced self-isolation gave me plenty of time in my new garden studio where I returned to the subject matter of the work I made during lockdown 1 - my parents' garden. These paintings are based on details of photographs of the apple tree bed. The light coming through the trellis and netting used to protect what had been fruit bushes planted behind the apple trees possessed a very particular quality, diffusing colour and flattening spatial depth to create a dream-like atmosphere. Dad, who died in July 2020, was the gardener in our family so the paintings are a kind of memorial to him.
